August’s Gin Box

Just awarded Silver medal at the Berlin International spirits competition as well as the distillery being named ‘Irish Distillery of the year!

Distilled on the Sliabh Liag Peninsula, Co Donegal. 43.2% ABV

The Wild Atlantic coastline of west Donegal is the inspiration behind the newest addition to Sliabh Liag Distillery’s portfolio, and this month’s Gin Box feature gin. An Dúlamán Irish Maritime Gin is a superb blend of botanicals capturing “Draíocht na Farraige” (the magic of the sea) with hints of fresh juniper, an umami richness and the dry tang of sea breeze.

The inspiration came about while James and Moira Doherty, now directors of The Sliabh Liag Distillery, were foraging seaweed. The Irish Maritime gin is made using only the finest Donegal Sweet Kombu (Sugar Kelp), Dillisk (Dulse), Pepper Dulse, Carrageen Moss and Channel Wrack. Pepper Dulse, sometimes known as the “truffle of the sea”, is the shyest of these coastal treasures and can only be harvested on a full moon.

Since its launch late last year An Dúlamán has received a tremendous response and plans are now in place to grow the brand internationally. The signature softness of An Dúlamán makes it extraordinarily versatile and classic gin cocktails stand apart when made with An Dúlamán – in particular the Negroni, where the soft earthy tones of An Dúlamán stand up to the bitterness of Campari. An Dúlamán makes a mighty martini and the unmistakable flavour profile is not masked under a good splash of vermouth. For those rare balmy Summer evenings, James recommends mixing An Dúlamán with straight tonic or ginger beer in a large glass with plenty of ice.

Bottled at 43.2$ ABV, An Dúlamán is presented in a dark bottle reminiscent of those found on the Armada wrecks along the coast of Donegal. The bottle’s labelling is drawn by a local artist and inspired by the Book of Kells. Each bottle is wax-sealed and the batch number is linked to the lunar phases.

Juniper Berries, Coriander Seeds, Angelica Root, Cassia Bark, Lemon Peel, Orange Peel,

Tasting Notes

On the nose, it is extremely fresh with great wafts of spice. Followed by citrus. On the palate it is rich and dry with upfront fresh bursts of juniper and hints of Turkish delight. There is an underlying peppered citrus that lingers deliciously.

To a large glass add, penty of ice.  Pour An Dulaman over the ice and squeeze a small wedge of Orange. Top with ginger beer and stir  for the ultimate Gin drink.
